2020 Mitsubishi Outlander

The entry-level ES has 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and heated side door mirrors. Step up to the SE to add fog lights, LED turn signal indicators in the side mirrors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Adding the Convenience Package gets you power-folding side mirrors and a power sunroof. The LE makes the contents of the Convenience package standard and adds some black exterior trim elements, while the SEL comes with a hands-free liftgate. The new SP trim adds a sunroof, black-finished alloy wheels, and a hood badge.

The base engine for the Outlander is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that generates 166 horsepower. This powertrain works with a CVT and comes with front-wheel drive or the optional all-wheel drive. A GT version of the Outlander has a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that makes 224 horsepower, and the PHEV version has a 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder and an electric motor.

The Outlander is one of the more fuel-efficient mid-size SUVs. The CVT helps it to achieve almost 30 miles per gallon on the highway, and if you opt for the PHEV version, it can get up to 190 horsepower and go up to 22 miles on pure electric power. If you need to tow, when equipped, the Outlander with the 2.4-liter gas engine can handle up to 1,500 pounds, and the GT can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Up to seven people can ride in the Outlander, and up to five in the PHEV. The cabin features soft-touch materials and includes convenience features such as a height-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and it also has second-row seats that slide and recline. The SE adds heated front seats, a combination of leatherette and fabric upholstery, and 8-way power-adjustable front seats. Upgrade to the SEL for leather seats. Standard technology in the Outlander includes a 7-inch touch screen, HD radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, and voice controls. Upgrades available in the higher trims include an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two more USB ports, and satellite radio. The infotainment system is very easy to use with controls that are within easy reach for the driver.

All of the Outlander models have a rearview camera. Mitsubishi makes several advanced driver-assist safety features available, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, a surround-view camera system, and pedestrian detection. You can also get automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot detector, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and lane change assist.
